We arrive in the Waterman Mountains and find the Turks Head Cacti blooming, but closed for the day... Standing in the shadeless desert it is hard to be too upset about a late arrival - even the late day sun is stunningly hot... Open blooms will have to wait for another time when we have less ambition to spend time outside of the truck's AC.

Our destination is a short hike from the road - just another small hill rising above the desert - we watch sunset light and shadow illuminate and cover the neighboring nameless hills and stretch out to the mountains in the distance.

Eventually the sunset adds subtle color to the smoke above the Santa Catalina Mountains - on this night the Bighorn Fire is burning near the top of the mountain and down Samaniego Ridge.
